“Baħar Cimiterju," meaning "cemetery at sea," was created in response to an alarming report published by German Newspaper Der Tagesspiegel in November 2017. The report claimed that over 33,000 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea since the 1990s.

The project serves as a virtual monument commemorating the lives of a hundred of these individuals who have died while seeking a better life. The virtual nature of the monument highlights the paradox of the vastness of the sea and the anonymity of those who perished in it, underscoring the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis.
